Some Specifics about KY Model Agents
In Edgewood, the Katalyst Agency is sometimes on the lookout for new talent. They regularly hold open calls for anyone seeking representation. Both beginners as well as experienced models are welcome.

Their connections are awesome: one of their clients recently landed the leading role in an upcoming feature film, Forever’s End, which is shooting in the area. He credits Katalyst with providing him with valuable leads to L.A.-based directors, agents, and managers that resulted in his getting the part.

In Lexington, another very active agency is Images Model and Talent Agency. One of their clients was recently named Child Female Model of the Year at a prestigious L.A. modeling competition and landed a co-starring role on the hit TV series Criminal Minds. Images currently has a Fall Pricing Special going on.

In Louisville, The Block Agency is a SAG-Franchised agency whose clients have been featured in hit movies and shows like C.S.I. and the Hanna Montana Movie. They have an extensive list of top clients. If you have talent in modeling or acting, they are looking for you.

Before you pick up the phone and start calling these or other agencies, here is some advice from a 35-year veteran of the modeling and photography business.

First, make sure you have a portfolio and comp card. Your portfolio should highlight how well you photograph and show you in a wide range of looks and settings. Include this portfolio and your comp card in a letter to the agency. Both your portfolio and letter should indicate your knowledge of the local market. Be sure to include your contact information in the letter.

Here are some other tips for applying to agencies as a new model:

1. Know your market. A medium-height woman in her early 40s should not have exclusively glamour shots. The female modeling agencies might be interested in casting this model as an executive or soccer mom. Know what types of roles you are suited for and aim for those.

2. Market yourself to the right agents. Know what agencies are looking for your type and focus on those agencies. It’s a waste of your time (and theirs) to market to agencies that are not looking to book your type.

3. Be available. Often projects arrive quickly. If an agency needs to reach you at the last minute, you need to answer the phone. Have a cell phone with you and pick up, or call back in a few minutes. A booking agent will call the people that they know are most likely to be reachable.

4. Follow up. Often, a model agent will give you helpful feedback and suggestions, then ask you to follow up. It means they think you have potential but need some tweaking to improve your look. Many people don’t bother to come back. This is a mistake.

5. Accept criticism and act on it. Don’t take criticism to heart. Instead, consider it a part of the learning process of any business. Listen and act on the feedback that sounds like it makes sense. If a booking agent turns you down, don’t argue, just thank them and move on to the next opportunity.

We hope these agencies and tips will help you with your new modeling career. Good luck!
